Five Orthopedic Procedures that Can Help You Get Back in the Game

If you are an athlete or someone who enjoys being active, it can be disheartening to sustain an injury that keeps you sidelined. Fortunately, with advances in technology, there are now more options than ever for treating a range of injuries. At Landa Spine & Orthopedic Center, we can treat a variety of problems using the latest knowledge, state-of-the-art equipment, and minimally invasive techniques. Here are five of the orthopedic procedures we offer.

Nerve Releases

A nerve release is a surgical procedure an orthopedic spine surgeon can complete to help relieve nerve compression conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome. These types of injuries can cause numbness, tingling, and pain due to compressed nerves. During the procedure, the orthopedic specialist will remove the constriction causing the symptoms, often resulting in immediate relief. However, in many patients, recovery is gradual and can take a few months. This is a highly effective procedure with excellent success rates.

Joint Aspirations and Injections

In this procedure, performed by a sports medicine doctor or orthopedic surgeon, a needle is used to either remove fluid from a joint for laboratory testing or inject the specific medication. Aspiration helps your physician determine the cause of your pain, while injections help treat your symptoms. The risks of this procedure are incredibly minimal, and it can be performed right in your sports medicine clinic. This technique is often used to help treat tendinitis, bursitis, and hip pain.

Proximal Hamstring Repair

Injuries to the proximal hamstring are common among athletes, particularly those who participate in sports requiring a lot of jumping and sprinting. Risk factors for this type of injury include age, a higher body mass index, and prior injury to the hamstring. Patients with hamstring injuries often experience sudden pain, muscle spasm, and difficulty walking. Proximal hamstring repair can help patients return to their normal level of function. This procedure is performed by an orthopedic specialist, and patients report very high rates of satisfaction with the outcome.

Cartilage Restoration

During a cartilage restoration procedure, the patient’s knee is resurfaced and realigned, then stabilized; this procedure can help many patients avoid traditional joint replacement. Cartilage restoration is particularly useful in patients younger than 50 who lead active lifestyles. Injuries to the articular cartilage – the smooth, firm covering that protects and cushions the joints – can cause swelling and pain. Cartilage restoration can repair damage to the cartilage using minimally invasive techniques for a more relaxed and faster recovery with fewer complications and less downtime.

Quad/Patella Tendon Repair

Your tendons are strong, fibrous cords of tissue that attach bones to muscles. Your quadriceps tendon helps you straighten your legs by working with the muscles in the front of the thigh. Sometimes, people experience small tears in this tendon that make it painful or difficult to participate in their normal daily activities. More rarely, the tear is large; this is a disabling injury that typically requires surgery and physical therapy. Patients who experience a quadriceps tendon tear may notice a sudden popping or tearing sensation, followed by pain, swelling, or an inability to straighten the knee. If your orthopedic surgeon feels that surgery is right for you, it will most likely be quad/patella tendon repair surgery. Keep in mind that your best odds for an optimal outcome involve having the surgery sooner, rather than later, after your injury .
