Landa Spine & Orthopedic Center Offering Laminectomy Procedure

Landa Spine & Orthopedic Center announced that they will now offer laminectomy as a treatment option for those with nerve compression in the spine. During this procedure, the surgeon will remove the rear portion of one or more vertebrae. They may also remove any ligaments or bone spurs that may be pressing on the nerve.

Preparing for a laminectomy

You should receive detailed instructions regarding what to do before your procedure. In general, however, you should:

  • Stock up on groceries and take care of any housekeeping and errands ahead of time so you can take it easy after surgery
  • Avoid eating and drinking after midnight the night before your surgery
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing to your appointment; avoid wearing jewelry such as bracelets and necklaces
  • Be sure to bring your insurance information and any co-pay you may have
  • If you are returning home the same day, bring someone to drive you and stay with you at home for a while

During your laminectomy

You will most likely receive general anesthesia and mechanical ventilation during your laminectomy. The surgeon will make an incision over the affected area in your back and pull aside the muscle and soft tissue to expose your spine. They will then cut away any ligaments, bone spurs, or bone compression the nerves (this is known as decompression). Depending on your particular needs, you may also undergo spinal fusion in which the surgeon uses a special implant to stabilize the lower back without restricting movement. When the surgery is complete, the incision will be stitched closed, and the anesthesia discontinued.

The recovery

After your procedure, you may go home the same day, but you are more likely to need to spend a day or so in the hospital. You will receive pain medication for the discomfort in your lower back. You may require assistance with getting out of bed and walking around the first few days after your procedure. At home, expect to continue to need pain medication. Most people will need these drugs for a week or two and should not drive during that time.

Be sure to limit activities that include stooping, bending, and lifting for several weeks. In the meantime, keep the incision clean, following your surgeon’s directions for bathing and showering. In about two weeks, you will be able to have your stitches removed. Your doctor will instruct you regarding when it’s safe to return to normal activities. Be sure to avoid long car rides or plane flights, which can increase the chances of blood clots in your legs. Be sure to stand and walk around at least once an hour if you do travel.

Ultimately, your recovery time will depend on your specific condition, the extent of your surgery, and other individual factors. However, laminectomy remains a highly effective option for treating specific causes of back pain.
