Do you have back pain? Coronavirus may be the cause

A recent study surveying a total of about 450 adults from Saudi Arabia that were quarantined found a significantly higher risk of developing back pain. The most common form of back pain recorded in the survey was lower back pain. The pain increased with weight, stress, sitting for long periods of time, and online learning.

Why Does This Occur?

“One thing they don’t tell you is you get, somehow, excruciating back pain.” The lower back pain is the result of an inflammatory response to the virus. Additionally, there are also many related symptoms that create further back pain. For instance, increased coughing from the virus may strain your back. Also, muscle stiffness can occur because of inactivity due to having the virus. As you can see, Covid-19 has many direct and indirect effects on your spine.

Inflammation of the Spinal Cord

Due to the aforementioned inflammatory response of the body after being infected with Covid-19, transverse myelitis may occur. Transverse myelitis happens when a part of the spinal cord that gets inflamed, usually damaging the myelin, a material covering nerve cell fibers. Additionally, transverse myelitis interferes with the messages the spinal cord sends. Common symptoms found as a result of this include neurological disorder consist of weak arms or legs, numbness and tingling, and pain in the lower back.
