Hemilaminectomy

About Us

A hemilaminectomy is a less invasive alternative to a full laminectomy. Patients employ this if they have spinal stenosis, or tightening around the nerves in the lumbar spine. A small incision is made, and special retractors are used to avoid cutting the spinal muscles open. A microscope is used to allow improved visualization. Unlike a laminectomy, most of the bone is preserved, and only a small window of bone is removed to allow access to the spinal canal. Through this window, any material that is pressing on the nerves can be removed, such as thickened ligaments, bone, and disc. The surgery usually takes about an hour, and patients can go home the same day.
