Endoscopic Lumbar Foraminotomy

About

This radical minimally invasive surgery is used for patients with pain in the lower extremity due to a pinched nerve. Lumbar surgery for a pinched nerve in the spine can relieve sciatica pain which can be felt not only in the lower back but can radiate outwards towards the legs and upper end. The technique allows the bony hole where the nerve exits the spine (the “foramen”) to be enlarged, releasing pressure on a squeezed nerve. A small metal tube is inserted, allowing direct visualization of the spine. Tiny shavers are used to shave bone, disc material can be removed with graspers, and the laser is sometimes used as well. The surgery is done with a tiny incision that can be closed with one or two absorbable sutures, and patients walk out of a surgery center shortly after the procedure.
