A slipped disc occurs when the outer walls of intervertebral disc tear. This happens where the annulus fibrosus is the thinnest. This is where the nerves of the spine exit and track distally into the body. The larger the tear, the more severe the symptoms and pain.
Symptoms
- Pain in the neck.
- Sensory changes such as numbness or tingling.
- Weakness, muscle atrophy or wasting in the arm.
- Diminished reflexes in the upper extremities.
- Muscle spasms and changes in posture.
- Loss of motion and inability to move the head and work.
Treatment Options
- Rest.
- Anti-inflammatory medication and other pain medications.
- Ice.
- Instruction in correction and maintenance of good posture.
- Braces or use of support.
- Physical therapy.
