Cervical Disc Replacement

About Cervical Disc Replacement

Cervical disc replacement is a surgical method of replacing the diseased or damaged intervertebral discs in the neck region with an artificial disc to restore motion to the spine. A cervical disc replacement is an alternative to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.

Procedure

During the surgery, the doctor makes an incision on the front side of the neck at the level of the damaged cervical disc. The muscles and soft tissues are gently moved apart for a better view of the cervical spine. We open the disc space, and the damaged disc is removed and replaced with the artificial disc. Fluoroscopy confirms the implanted disc in a proper location. Then the incision is closed.

Complications May Include:

  • Injury to blood vessels.
  • Dislodgement or breakage of the device.
